Volunteer Registration – Wounded Heroes Day

WHO: The Independence Fund and North Carolina’s wounded Veterans.

WHAT: Volunteer Registration for the Wounded Heroes Day Celebration

WHEN: April 27, 2025, at 4:00 PM

WHERE: Lee Park Church – 2491 Morgan Mill Rd, Monroe, NC 28110

WHY: On April 24, 2010, SGT Michael Verardo suffered life-altering combat injuries in an IED explosion while serving in Afghanistan. Since that fateful day, SGT Verardo has undergone 120 surgeries, along with years of speech, visual, physical, and occupational therapies. Verardo, like so many other catastrophically wounded, injured, and ill Veterans, brings the scars of war back home. Wounded Veterans continue showing displays of courage and resilience as they overcome new challenges and obstacles. The Independence Fund and the state of North Carolina are committed to honoring the sacrifice, courage, and resiliency of this brave group of servicemen and women. On April 24, 2021, the state of North Carolina passed House Bill 138/Senate Bill 132 designating every April 24th as Wounded Heroes Day. The Independence Fund and NC General Assembly Members, led by Representative David Willis, acknowledge that when a service member returns home with life-changing injuries, the entire family absorbs the sacrifice and adjusts life to care for the wounded Veteran.
